Guide To CNC Chuck Jaws: Soft Jaws vs. Hard Jaws
soft jaws are more adaptable but wear out faster, while hard jaws are more durable but less flexible for customizing the fit of the workpiece. ...
Read MoreTo install jaws in a 3-jaw chuck, follow these steps:
Rotate the scroll (the spiral plate inside the chuck) counterclockwise until the scroll thread opening aligns with the first jaw slot. This makes room to insert the first jaw.
Insert jaw number 1 into its designated slot and push it in until it engages with the second thread of the scroll (the internal spiral).
Turn the scroll back clockwise to engage the jaw, pushing it further in. You may need to wiggle or tap gently to help the jaw seat properly as the scroll tightens it into place.
Repeat this process with jaw number 2 and jaw number 3, inserting each into their corresponding slots in order and ensuring they engage the scroll thread correctly.
Once all three jaws are installed and the scroll is turned fully, the jaws should meet at the center of the chuck, allowing you to grip round or hexagonal stock accurately.
Some tips for ease:
Make sure the jaws are inserted in the correct order and slots (often marked as Jaw 1, 2, 3 or A, B, C) to maintain chuck accuracy.
If the jaws are stiff to insert, use a soft tap with a plastic hammer or wrench to help seat them without damage.
Clean and lubricate the scroll and jaws before installation to prevent wear and ease installation.
Mark the jaws if you remove them regularly to ensure you reinsert them in the same order and maintain good accuracy.
