A self-centering lathe chuck is a work-holding device commonly used on lathes to grip and center a workpiece automatically as the jaws are tightened. The most familiar types are those with three or four jaws.

  • Main Use : Useful for gripping workpieces with four-sided (square) or eight-sided (octagonal) shapes in a centered position, as well as round stock.

  • Advantages :

    • Versatility : Can grip both square and round workpieces with automatic centering.

    • Faster than independent 4-jaw : Provides speed benefits over fully independent jaw chucks.

  • Limitations :

    • Not as common as the independent 4-jaw version, and typically less flexible for eccentric or irregular work.
